Location-Independent Organizations: Designing Collaboration Across Space and Time

Collaboration is critical to organizations and difficult when work distributed. Prior research has indicated that individuals are distributed, respond by structuring their decrease reciprocal interdependence, reduce the complexity of tasks perform, or accept moderate inefficiencies. Yet in an increasing number organizations—location-independent organizations—employees fully exist without a physical office, engage reciprocally interdependent work. To understand how these distributed collaborate, I undertook inductive multiple-case study. identify two patterns collaboration, asynchronous orientation real-time orientation, reveal specific enabling practices for each, with focus on asynchronous-oriented organizations.
